The presence of our convict heritage is strongest on the Tasman Peninsula at Eaglehawk Neck and of course Port Arthur, the nation’s most significant historic site.
Itinerary
Depart Hobart – 8.30 am
Departing Hobart we journey to Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula, isolated by Eaglehawk Neck a narrow strip of land only 410 metres across and a magnificently rugged coastline, it made an ideal location for a penal colony. It was home to 12,700 convicts between 1830 and 1877. The Port Arthur Historic Site offers an interpretation gallery and the ‘Lottery of Life’ game, a guided walking tour, the convict museum, access to more than 30 restored buildings, ruins and the beautiful gardens.

Before leaving the Tasman Peninsula we will visit spectacular coastal cliffs and geological features carved by the wind and tempestuous seas – Blowhole, Devils Kitchen and Tasman Arch at Eaglehawk Neck. Continuing our journey through the site of the infamous ‘Dog Line’ we leave the Peninsula and travel to Richmond to explore the historic village, an impressive Georgian township with historic gems, unmatched elsewhere in Australia.
In Richmond you can walk on the oldest bridge in Australia, built by convict labour between 1823 and 1825, visit Australia’s oldest remaining Catholic Church (1836) and time permitting explore the cells of Richmond Goal (1825), Australia’s oldest convict gaol, for a chilling insight into the existence of Van Dieman’s Land’s convicts, bushrangers and aborigines imprisoned there.
Return Hobart – Approximately 4.30 - 5.00 pm
