Surrounded by water and rainforest you are perfectly placed to walk the trails of the national park, canoe the Barron River Gorge, swim in natural waterfalls or simply relax on the balconies and private platform overlooking the river. Dive on the Great Barrier Reef or enjoy a sunset walk on nearby Palm Cove beach. Wanggulay is your dream escape.

Wanggulay - a luxurious home in the rainforest. Five star holiday accommodation in tropical north Queensland beside the Great Barrier Reef. Ten minutes from the vibrant city of Cairns and beautiful northern beaches.

Wanggulay House
The spectacular landscape surrounding Wanggulay is embedded with enormous meaning and significance to the 'Djabugay' Aboriginals. A rainforest tribe who have been proud custodians of this region for thousands of years. Story places (natural features such as mountains, rivers, waterfalls, swimming holes, trees) symbolise features that were created during the ancestral creation period (sometimes called the "Dreaming" or the "Dreamtime"). These places have powerful meaning and properties.

Nearby is a natural ponding area on the Barron River which has been a popular hunting and resting place for the 'Djabugay'. Their word for resting place is 'Nani'. Here the river splits into two, forming Kamerunga Island. This is a 'sacred' place for the tribe where initiation ceremonies took place.

On two levels, the home offers all the amenities one would expect. As you enter, a large living area with cathedral ceilings flows uninhibited through to expansive decks with views over the rainforest. Furnishings include large lounges, Balinese day beds and a dining table seating eight. A gourmet kitchen, beautiful master bedroom with ensuite and spa and a further guest bedroom also share the upstairs.

Downstairs, a media room and two further bedrooms all have access to their own private deck area. The two-metre deep wet edge swimming pool is stunning, incorporating a Zen-like water feature and spa. Seating on different levels within the pool area provides quiet spots for relaxing and dining. Close to Cairns, the reef and rainforest, this is an exceptional retreat.

Sleeping Arrangements - A place to dream in the land of the 'dreamtime. The master bedroom looks out through the dappled sunlight of the treetops with the river down below. Birds sing and play in the branches surrounding the large balcony outside. Fine linen, polished timber floors - attention to detail, decorative soaps in a Balinese tray, fragrant frangipannis floating in a bowl and a luxurious ensuite bathroom with a spa-bath.

Another bedroom is located on the same level as the master bedroom. Down the stairs, on the next level, are two more bedrooms with a large bathroom and a wide balcony overlooking the forest. Enjoy the eucalyptus-scented breeze from the forest or close the doors and turn on the air-conditioning.

Wanggulay Living Area - Natural ochres, earth-colours and textures invite you into the main living area under a large timber cathedral ceiling. The spacious open-plan living area extends outside to a wide verandah high above the forest floor in the treetops. Bi-fold doors slide back, allowing the large outdoor area to become part of the living room. On hot days, with the doors closed, the integrated air-conditioning keeps the house cool. On the floor below is a smaller living area with a lounge, large screen television and bi-fold doors opening onto a verandah. Of course you can take your 'living area' outside to the resort-style pool or the deck amongst the trees on the hillside below the house.

Kitchen and Dining - A chef could not wish for a better catering kitchen with all crockery, cutlery and utensils at hand, a wall oven, cook top, refrigerator and plenty of bench space to serve that special meal. The dining table sits up to ten people. A place for a quiet intimate dinner under candlelight out on the verandah, or a meal with family and friends after a day out on the Great Barrier Reef. Outside, next to the pool, is a 'state of the art' barbeque and a table to sit eight people under the stars or enjoying the tropical sunshine.

Amenities - The amenities room has a laundry with a washing machine, clothes dryer and ironing facilities.

Wanggulay Pool - The cooling sound of pool water cascading into Japanese riverbed rocks has a 'zen' like quality in harmony with the environment. The custom-made pool is unique. A series of long steps lead down to water two metres deep which, at night with the pool light on, becomes a cool luminescent blue. Beside the pool, a wooden Balinese crocodile bench on wheels, a superb stainless steel barbeque and a table for eight. If you feel like a midnight swim under the stars there is access to the pool via the main bedroom. Throw some steaks on the barbeque, lie on the sundeck with cool drinks or swim in the cool water - 'Wanggulay' has the perfect outdoor entertaining area.
