It has taken approximately 10 years of unbelievable patience for Irena and Jeremy Hutchings to achieve the vision of opening Australia's first luxury tented camp. Paperbark Camp, Jervis Bay, is Eco-tourism at it's best, being a low impact, niche-market venture that adheres to the principles of ecologically sustainable tourism.

The original landscape was carefully cleared by hand, so that delicate ecosystems, natural flora and birdlife have been preserved. No major earthworks or clearing were done. All toilet waste and waste water is pumped off the site to protect the pristine Currambene Creek, which now forms part of the Jervis Bay Marine Park.

Paperbark Camp Dining
The Gunyah (aboriginal for meeting place, or place of shelter) is at the heart of the camp. Designed by Sydney architects, Nettleton Tribe, it is a chic space built high off the ground to enjoy the sea breeze and a wonderful position amongst the tree tops.

Paperbark Camp is also very much a nature-based culinary experience. The gunya perched high in the trees offers a first class magical dining experience. The chef delights in using fresh, local produce to produce a mouth watering innovative menu catering for all tastes. Relax by the open fireplace with an after dinner drink before taking the torch in hand to light the way back to your forest dwelling.

In Summer, the sliding doors open up for outdoor dining on the verandah, providing a bushy backdrop from which to enjoy meals and observe the goings on of our resident possums, sugar gliders and birds. In Winter, an open fire and candlelight bring warmth to the room, and cosy lounges are a perfect place for curling up on after dinner.

Resident guests are welcome to use the Gunyah throughout the day and evening and are free to help themselves to coffee and tea at their leisure. For conferences and small groups, the Gunyah becomes your own unique meeting space, a tranquil place in which to exchange ideas and get creative.

The Gunyah is also open to non-resident guests 7 nights a week for dinner. When booking, please advise of any particular dietary requirements you may have, in order that we may cater accordingly. Children over 6 years are welcome, please notify at time of booking.
