Resort Information
Fly Fishing - Cape Don has access to a wide variety of saltwater fly fishing environments for the experienced or the novice fly fisherman wanting that "catch of a lifetime". Site casting in the clear flats and estuary systems, the challenge of the big pelagic fish in the bluewater and the precision casting for barramundi amongst the mangroves are all possible fly fishing experiences. The Lodge has a fly tying station for the fly rodders wanting to try new fly styles on site with their experienced guide. Fly rods for practice or training, and specialty saltwater flies are available at the
Lodge.
Sports Fishing - Cape Don is renowned for its diverse range of sports fishing experiences making it a fisherman's paradise virtually all year round. Accessible from Cape Don are mangrove lined creeks, sandy island cays, fringing reef and rocky outcrops in deep bluewater, all ideal fishing environments. The Northern Territory's icon fish, the barramundi, awaits the challenge of the keen angler. The experienced guides and the use of our modern, fully equipped boats with comfortable, swivel seats and casting platform will ensure a great fishing experience. Cape Don's catch and release philosophy and the use of barbless hooks, where possible, make it a sustainable activity for others to enjoy for future years.
Cape Don's selection of modern, fully equipped boats enables them to best match the group size with the most suitable boat size for the various types of fishing available. They currently run a fleet of 6 boats ranging from boats suitable for one passenger to 5 passengers. Prices vary depending on how many guests on each boat. Whether the target species is barramundi or spanish mackerel, Cape Don have the boat and equipment to suit.
For the non-angler Cape Don offers spectacular scenery in unspoiled areas where only a few people have ventured. The creeks and surrounding coastline offer a myriad of bird species and marine life. The smooth sandy beaches of Cobourg Peninsula are not often disturbed by mans' footprints, only by the tracks left behind by the crocodiles, goannas and sea turtles which have used these beaches for thousands of years.
The Cobourg Marine Park was also established to protect the coastline with its unique fringing reef, home to prevalent sea turtles, dugong and manta rays to name a few, all of which are still traditionally hunted by the local Aboriginal custodians. Guests at Cape Don have the approval of the Aboriginal custodians to enter these traditional hunting grounds to view the spectacular wildlife and marine life previously only experienced by the local Aboriginal people.
Private picnic lunches on a sandy island, exploring endless sandy beaches for turtle nests and crocodile slides, hunting for the giant mud crabs with a locally made Aboriginal spear, are all possible activities for the adventurer who is fortunate enough to stay at Cape Don.
Incentive and Corporate Groups
Whilst having a reputation for its diverse range of sportsfishing, Cape Don Experience is now catering for the corporate / incentive market wanting that touch of adventure and exclusive use of all facilities in a very remote and pristine location.
What better way to develop that 'team building' than on the water competing for the biggest catch of barramundi or lunching on your own deserted island in the Arafura sea sampling freshly caught mudcrabs, cooked on the coals, or fresh oysters off the rocks. A campfire dinner around a bonfire on a private beach with only the stars to gaze at and the sounds of the sea offers an alternative to the friendly "family table" atmosphere at the Lodge.
Various guided tours have been developed where guests have the opportunity to view the elusive dugong, sea turtle, manta ray and of course the salt water crocodile. Other options available are guided walks to Monsoon Rainforest areas, walks along endless sandy beaches with options to experience colourful living coral in a spectacular mangrove lined creek - quite unique to Australia.
When full house is considered 10-12 people there is an incredible sense of privacy when you have the Homestead and all the surrounds to yourselves with eager staff to cater for the most discerning needs. Cape Don has exclusive access to over 180km of unique Top End coastline and the country within - where privacy is guaranteed.
With exclusive use of the lodge, arranging Board meetings, themed evenings, or just networking around the 'games room' after dinner is all part and parcel of the atmosphere created at Cape Don. Competitions between boats with prizes for the largest, first, longest, smallest catch of the day adds to the team building and camaraderie between guests at Cape Don.
