Local Tours ex Kings Canyon Wilderness Lodge
Special tours to visit Aboriginal petroglyphs (ancient stone rock carvings) operate in the surrounding region from the lodge and are included in the price of the APT exclusive group packages. A range of optional activities also for independent travellers are available from the station including escorted quad bike rides, camel rides and helicopter flights over Kings Canyon, the Central Ranges and remote waterholes. (all charges payable direct).
Kings Canyon was formed by water eroding fault lines in the ridge, its orange ochre walls rising more than 100m from the plain. Several marked walking tracks pass the main scenic points, including a semi-permanent waterhole, the Garden of Eden, which supports a lush stand of ancient cycads, as well as a family of ducks.
You can walk the 6km loop track, which climbs to the summit, past strange dome formations to spectacular viewing points into the canyon and across the desert floor or take a shorter 2km track which provides access to the lower section and is advisable for those less mobile, especially in summer when temperatures can soar dangerously.
The trails give a wide berth to an important sacred Aboriginal site but the 6km loop passes more rock art where children's handprints mark a small cave. Other popular sites include locations for the movie Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, parts of which were filmed here.
Our Environment
Kings Canyon Wilderness Lodge is a fully accredited eco business. APT considers the preservation of the Kings Canyon / Central Australian environment to be of vital importance. To this end, we ensure that we make the smallest environmental impact possible on this unique wilderness area and be proactive in reducing the effects of climate change. We are committed to educating our guests on water conservation, as well as training all of our staff in responsible environmental management with the assistance of landowners and local park rangers. More than this, we also only use eco-certified guest amenities at our lodge as well as recycling wherever possible.
APT is acutely aware of the damaging effects of climate change on the environment. Our offices, camps and infrastructure already adopt a range of practices to reduce emissions, including the use of solar power, reduce energy usage, recycling and other initiatives. Further, we have established a dedicated project team to determine our environmental impact and devise strategies to continue to minimise our emissions and ultimately become carbon neutral.
