Home ~ Northern Territory ~ Northern Territory Top End Accommodation ~ Bamurru Plains

Bamurru Plains is located on the 300 square kilometre Swim Creek Station adjoining Kakadu National Park, 250km east of Darwin. The "wild bush luxury" of up market African safaris is the theme of Bamurru Plains. On the pristine coastal floodplains of the Mary River, guests will live and breathe the natural environment while being afforded all the expected creature comforts of a premium Safari Camp. The stone country of Arnhem Land and Kakadu is just a short distance away, providing an insight into the region's Aboriginal heritage.

While Peak Season will be May - September, Charles Carlow, the owner of Bamurru Plains explained that one of the best times to visit will be in the wet season (Feb-Apr) when the flood plains are alive with life. These wetlands have an extraordinary diversity and volume of birdlife, reptiles and wildlife on offer. Bamurru Plains is host to one of the largest crocodile populations in the Northern Territory while the fringing savannah bush is home to thousands of wallabies, dingoes and other animals.

The camp will continue to be open for most of the wet months so that those hankering for a green season experience can view first hand the stormy skies, lush greenery and mustering on Swim Creek.

Accommodation at Bamurru Plains
Bamurru Plains was designed for discerning people who are looking for an Australian luxury safari experience away from the mainstream, or people wishing to take that ‘once in a life time adventure.’ This beautiful Safari Camp was built with intimacy and authenticity in mind, ensuring that guest’s space is not encroached upon by scheduled tour groups.

The luxury safari suites are located among Pandanus and Savannah bush with sweeping views across the wetlands. Each safari suite has a private ensuite, is perched on a raised timber platform and is designed to blend with the surrounding bushland. The morning chorus of tens of thousands of Magpie Geese, after whom the camp is named, is an experience in itself.

Sit back and relax in your room which has been designed with the outside in mind so that you can literally see and hear what is around you and have a sense of closeness to the environment. With no telephones, televisions, CD players or the typical features of a hotel room to distract you, your focus turns to the surrounding environment. Relax by the pool with a long cool drink and watch the evening in this pristine wilderness unfold as only untouched nature knows how.

Our concept is simple - we have focused on key creature comforts, a supremely comfortable bed, 100% cotton linen, large soft bath towels, a high pressure shower and have provided lots of space for you to feel the freedom.

Gourmet food and premium wines will be served in the main lodge. Meals are wholesome and innovative with a hint of native produce in many dishes. Your hosts will provide an informal level of attention that is only possible when you are one of a small number of guests. It is their knowledge of the area that brings the experience alive.

With just 9 safari suites built amongst the savannah bush fringing the floodplains, the camp is exclusive and guests will not see other tourists on the property. Make time to enjoy all the facilities on hand, including a library and bar, dining area, outdoor deck and swimming pool.

Each year in the ‘wet season’, usually January to March, the floodplains are replenished with the monsoonal rains and the flora, fauna and fish of the Top End spring to life. Explore the coastal floodplains by airboat and Sampan River by river cruise and view crocodiles, wallabies and wild buffalo in the surrounding savannah country, abundant fishing - and brilliant sunsets as flocks of birds return to roost.
