Thorn Park, Clare Valley & Kangaroo Island

Thorn Park Country House, since it opened in 1987, has been the destination of choice for all discerning travellers to the South Australian Clare Valley wine region. After 23 years David and Michael were looking to run a smaller operation and, when the opportunity arose to sell the property to their neighbours, the Jesuits of Seven Hill Wines, it seemed serendipitous. Thorn Park Country House is now used as a Jesuit retreat, and their new venue, Thorn Park - by the vines, is located in a perfect Australian bushland and vineyard setting on the edge of Sevenhill, just 2 km from their previous location.

Features and Facilities at Thorn Park Properties

by the Vines
(Clare Valley wine region SA)
3 x double rooms - sleeps 2-6 persons
Thorn Park - by the Vines manages to capture the essence of privacy and peace and has just the right amount of modernity and openness without ever intruding into the private spaces of the rooms. The location is idyllic - surrounded by vineyards and tall gum trees and overlooks a small lake. Pursuits are gentle and restorative: indulge in a cooking class in the purpose-designed gourmet kitchen, or enjoy a late afternoon drink on the main deck soaking in the sunset - the view epitomises everything that the extraordinary landscape artist Sir Hans Heysen so cleverly captured on canvas in his superb landscapes.

on the Island
(Penneshaw - Kangaroo Island SA)
3 bedroom holiday home - sleeps 6 persons
Thorn Park - on the Island is located on Kangaroo Island, one of the state’s most popular and spectacular tourist destinations. Thirty minutes by plane to Kingscote airport or a two½ hour trip by car and 45 minute Sealink ferry transfer, the property, a modern three bedroom beach house comfortably catering for 2-6 persons, is fully self contained and has excellent cooking facilities for those special occasions.

Your Thorn Park Hosts - David Hay and Michael Speers
Although David Hay might be better known as one of Australia’s finest cooks, he started his career as an interior designer and still continues to do occasional assignments, time and interest permitting. This of course is an explanation of the style and elegance of the Thorn Park properties, and it is his ability to pitch style, elegance and comfort in unique and original ways that makes Thorn Park properties so highly sought after. A self–taught cook David’s love of fresh regional produce has deeply influenced his cooking style, but it is the learning experience of travel that has continuously enriched and embellished the offerings from his kitchen and his cooking classes.

A former senior arts master, Michael Speers is a talented artist and accomplished and patient teacher Michael’s reputation for front–of–house service is legendary. Michael welcomes you on arrival, attends to every detail, from pre dinner drinks to last drinks and the coffee in the morning, to assisting with your day’s plans with well–informed recommendations. Such personalised attention to detail is rare. Never intrusive, always perfectly pitched, Michael’s attention is intuitive; he gauges perfectly, just how much (or how little) their guests require.
